Connection between cold temperatures and joint pain

Learn about joint pains caused by cold weather, and how to deal with them.

We have all heard expressions such as ” cold enough to chill my bones “. In fact, there is a well-established false popular belief that the cold is one of the causes of rheumatic diseases. In this article we will debunk this myth.

When it is cold and we feel discomfort “in our bones” due to the change in temperature, it is actually the joints that cause it. The cold and dampness make the muscles more contracted and numb, which causes more contractures and aches, but not pain in the bones. Bones may ache when they are broken or when there is a major blow.

Temperatures have no influence on the prevalence or causes that trigger rheumatic diseases, but it is true that the cold has an impact on the perception or sensation of pain in those who suffer from joint problems.

Weather does cause joint pain, but not rheumatic illnesses. When temperatures drop our body feels the sensation of cold, the heart decreases cardiac output. Blood circulation slows down, muscle tension increases, and they contract. This is when the perception of pain is noticed.

Therefore, even if the sensation of pain occurs during cold weather, there is no need to be alarmed. The most important thing will be:

  • Follow the treatment prescribed by the doctor, in case you have a rheumatic disease and have been diagnosed.
  • Wrap up well.
  • Avoid temperature changes.
  • If necessary or possible, adapt your home and make it a warmer place.
  • Apply local heat to the affected area to counteract joint discomfort, in case the pain is daily and constant.
  • Staying active is one of the best ways to prevent or slow down the symptoms of rheumatic diseases or joint pain.

If pain persists, please consult a rheumatology doctor. Health professionals can diagnose and treat rheumatic conditions, which are among the most common in adult patients.
